SUMMARY:Library Closed on Presidents Day
DESCRIPTION:The Library will be closed on Presidents’ Day\, Monday\, February 17. \nFun fact: Did you know the official Federal holiday is actually called Washington’s Birthday? In 1885\, Congress designated February 22\, George Washington’s birthday\, as a holiday for all federal workers making it the first federal holiday to honor an individual’s birth date. Nearly a century later\, in 1971\, the Uniform Monday Holiday Law changed the date to the third Monday in February. The position of the holiday between the birthdays of Washington and Abraham Lincoln gave rise to the popular name of Presidents’ Day. Today’s fun fact is brought to you by the National Archives (https://www.archives.gov/news/topics/washingtons-birthday). \n\nWhile the Library is closed for the holiday\, our digital collections are available 24/7. Download e-books\, stream audiobooks\, and e-magazine through the Ohio Digital Library where over 150 titles are available about U.S. Presidents!

SUMMARY:Library Closed on Martin Luther King\, Jr. Day
DESCRIPTION:The Library will be closed on Martin Luther King\, Jr. Day\, Monday\, January 20. \nWriting in The Washington Post in 1983\, Coretta Scott King provided a vision of how the holiday honoring her husband should be observed: \n“The holiday must be substantive as well as symbolic. It must be more than a day of celebration . . . Let this holiday be a day of reflection\, a day of teaching nonviolent philosophy and strategy\, a day of getting involved in nonviolent action for social and economic progress.” \n\nWhile the Library is closed for the holiday\, our digital collections are available 24/7. Download e-books\, stream audiobooks\, and e-magazine through the Ohio Digital Library where over 150 titles are available about Martin Luther King\, Jr. alone!

SUMMARY:Library Closed on Juneteenth
DESCRIPTION:The Bellaire Public Library will be closed all day Wednesday\, June 19\, in observation of Juneteenth. The Library will reopen for regularly scheduled hours\, on Thursday\, June 20. \n \nJuneteenth\, the oldest known celebration of the end of slavery in the United States\, is observed every year on June 19\, the day the news of the Emancipation Proclamation reached enslaved people in Galveston\, Texas\, in 1865. On June 19\, 1865\, Maj. Gen. Gordon Granger and Union soldiers arrived in Galveston\, Texas\, bringing news that the American Civil War had ended and enslaved people were now free\, 2½ years after President Abraham Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation became official on Jan. 1\, 1863. The 13th Amendment\, ratified in 1865\, freed enslaved people throughout the country. \nJuneteenth became a federal holiday in 2021. \nWhile the Library will be closed for the holiday\, access to the Library’s digital services is always available remotely. Check out e-books\, streaming audio or video\, digital magazines\, and more through Ohio Digital Library or through your tablet or smartphone’s Libby app. \n
