DESCRIPTION:The Ohio Valley is rich with sightings of cryptids. Anecdotes describe animals or humanoids\, often monstrous or frightening\, that don’t conform to species recognized by science. Investigator Fred Saluga\, director of the WV Center for Unexplained Events and the Fayette County\, PA Bigfoot Research Project will lead us on a five-week journey exploring the history and local sightings of these mysterious creatures. DESCRIPTION:The Bellaire Public Library will be closed all day Wednesday\, June 19\, in observation of Juneteenth. The Library will reopen for regularly scheduled hours\, on Thursday\, June 20. \n \nJuneteenth\, the oldest known celebration of the end of slavery in the United States\, is observed every year on June 19\, the day the news of the Emancipation Proclamation reached enslaved people in Galveston\, Texas\, in 1865. On June 19\, 1865\, Maj. Gen. Gordon Granger and Union soldiers arrived in Galveston\, Texas\, bringing news that the American Civil War had ended and enslaved people were now free\, 2½ years after President Abraham Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation became official on Jan. 1\, 1863. The 13th Amendment\, ratified in 1865\, freed enslaved people throughout the country. \nJuneteenth became a federal holiday in 2021. \nWhile the Library will be closed for the holiday\, access to the Library’s digital services is always available remotely. Both sets of dies are still in the Osbourne die vault today. Osborne made political coins for eight other presidential campaigns including Ulysses Grant and Franklin Roosevelt. You can learn more about Osbourne Coinage\, Wednesday\, Feb. 21 at 6 pm\, when Patrick Hipple\, Account Executive at Osborne Coinage will be giving a presentation about the coin company at the Great Stone Viaduct Winter Lecture Series here at the Library.

Kids are invited to stay for open play in the Library’s Community Room for open play with board games and a craft station following the program. Needed supplies include paper towels\, toilet paper\, cleaning supplies\, etc. \nWEEKLY PROGRAM SCHEDULE: \n\nWednesday\, June 7 at 1 pm: “Meet Our Neighbors” with local law enforcers — Deputy Sheriff Joshua Haught & Police Chief JJ Watson will tell us about their role in the community\, read the book Our Police by Jack E. Levin\, and show us their police cars!\nAll Together Now!\nBetween the weeks of June 4-17\, we will be collecting donations for the food pantries at the Salvation Army and The Living Bread Kitchen at First United Methodist Church.\nWednesday\, June 14 at 1 pm: Open to all ages — Magician Rory Rennick presenting a historic portrayal as Henry “Box” Brown — For the week of Juneteenth\, we’ll learn about the iconic escaped slave-turned-magician who mailed himself to freedom in a small wooden box.\nWednesday\, June 21 at 1 pm: “Meet Our Neighbors” with Jersey the K9 Therapy Dog with Handler Jennifer Yuhase —  What does a Therapy Dog do? Handler Jennifer will explain and read a book K9 Duke the Comfort Dog\, then you’ll have the chance to hang out with Jersey the K9 Therapy Dog.\nAll Together Now!\nBetween the weeks of June 18-30\, we’ll be collecting donations for the Belmont County Animal Shelter. Bridgeport Schools music teacher Miss Ashley Krieger will bring instruments for kids to play to lead us in some music basics and teach us some fun songs.\nWednesday\, July 5 at 1 pm: Free Play Day with Ice Cream Floats — In honor of the 4th of July\, we’ll enjoy red and blue ice cream floats. An “Arts & Crafts” station where kids can make their own crafts and several games will be available for kids to play in the Library’s Community Room.\nWednesday\, July 12 at 1 pm: “Zoo to You” Program — Zoo educators from Oglebay’s Good Zoo will teach us about some unlikely beneficial and social animals. Come and meet an armadillo\, an opossum\, and some very social cockroaches!\nWednesday\, July 19 at 1 pm: “Meet Our Neighbors” with the Bellaire Volunteer Fire Department —  Lieutenant Zach Coffield will tell us what volunteer firefighters do\, read the book Fire Trucks Jim Keppeler\, and give a tour of a fire truck!\nAll Together Now!\nBetween the weeks of July 17-29\, we’ll be collecting donations for the Bellaire Volunteer Fire Department.
