Hello, Bellaire! I’m Jack, the mule behind the story of The House That Jack Built. Years ago, I worked alongside Jake Heatherington hauling coal from the mines. Jake always said I deserved credit for helping build the fortune that made the Heatherington Mansion possible, and that’s how the house got its famous nickname. Today, I’m honored that my story lives on through the Bellaire Public Library and Jack the Book Burro, helping new generations discover Bellaire’s history, one book at a time.
A New Job for an Old Mule
You know, a mule never expects to become famous.
When I was hauling coal alongside Jake, I wasn’t thinking about history books or being remembered more than a century later. I was simply doing my part. But stories have a funny way of traveling through time, and I’m humbled that the people of Bellaire still remember me.
That’s why I’ve gladly accepted a new responsibility.
Today, I proudly serve as the official mascot and brand ambassador of the Bellaire Public Library. As Jack the Book Burro, I have traded mine tunnels for bookshelves and coal cars for storybooks. My work looks a little different these days, but the mission is much the same: helping build something valuable for our community.
In Jake’s time, I helped carry coal that fueled opportunity and growth. Today, I help carry a love of reading, learning, and local history to children and families throughout Bellaire. Every book opened, every story shared, and every young reader encouraged is another way of building a brighter future.
It is an honor to represent a library that preserves our community’s history while inspiring new generations to create their own stories. I promise to continue serving Bellaire with the same loyalty, hard work, and determination that Jake always saw in me.
